Recurrent Rossby waves and south-eastern Australian heatwaves

چکیده
Abstract. In the Northern Hemisphere, recurrence of transient synoptic-scale Rossby wave packets in same phase over periods days to weeks, termed RRWPs, may repeatedly create similar surface weather conditions. This can lead persistent anomalies. Here, we first demonstrate significance RRWPs for hot spells Southern Hemisphere (SH) using ERA-Interim (ERA-I) reanalysis dataset and then examine role blocks heatwaves south-eastern Australia (SEA). A Weibull regression analysis shows that are statistically associated with a significant increase duration several regions SH, including SEA. Two case studies SEA summers 2004 2009 illustrate forming recurrent ridges (anticyclonic potential vorticity – PV anomalies), aiding persistence heatwaves. Then, weather-station-based identify heatwaves, find more frequent than climatology during extreme activity (high RSEA). On both high RSEA circumglobal zonal wavenumber 4 5 (WN4, WN5) anomaly patterns present composite mean upper-level field, an anticyclonic The Fourier decomposition meridional wind velocity fields further reveals WN4 WN5 components suitable aids ridge RSEA. addition, anomalous blocking Indian South Pacific oceans which help modulate RRWPs.

Trapping Rossby Waves
Waves associated to large scale oceanic motions are gravity waves (Poincaré waves which disperse fast) and quasigeostrophic waves (Rossby waves). In this Note, we show by semiclassical arguments, that Rossby waves can be trapped and we characterize the corresponding initial conditions.
متن کاملRossby waves: synergy in action.
Rossby waves are an important phenomenon, linking processes in the west of ocean basins with forcing that occurred earlier in the east. We show evidence for such features in satellite-derived datasets of sea-surface height, temperature and ocean colour, using a section of the south Indian Ocean as an example. We discuss the possible mechanisms for an effect on chlorophyll, and we investigate th...
متن کاملSynergistic Observations of Rossby Waves
Rossby waves are an important part of the ocean's response to changes in atmospheric stimuli, and provide a mechanism by which the west of ocean basins learns of changes in the east. In the past decade many papers have discussed their sea surface height signal in the altimetric record, showing that Rossby waves are common in all ocean basins and drawing attention to the discrepancy between obse...
متن کاملLinear and Nonlinear Rossby Waves in Basins
The linear and nonlinear Rossby wave solutions are examined in homogeneous square basins on the /-plane both with and without a thin meridional barrier. In the presence of the meridional barrier the basin is almost partitioned into two; only two small gaps of equal width, d, to the north and south of the barrier allow communication between the eastern and western sub-basins. Solutions are force...
